ApnaBundelkhand.com, New Delhi: Targeting the Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh, Minority Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid today said that monetary assistance is not reaching Bundelkhand due to political problems.

"There is a big problem with Bundelkhand. The Central government had a new approach to solving it. But there are political problems due to which though we want to provide funds, they are not reaching the people of the region," Khurshid said while speaking at a leadership summit organised by CNBC TV 18 group here.

Referring to the erection of statues by the ruling BSP in his home state Uttar Pradesh, Khurshid told Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who spoke before him, "you have listed a number of achievements of your government but you cannot match us in the number of elephants."

He said there were more elephants in Uttar Pradesh.

ApnaBundelkhand.com, New Delhi: Expanding the network of Kendriya Vidyalayas in the country, the government is set to open 107 central schools, including seven in Bundelkhand, this year.

The Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC) under Finance Ministry has approved a proposal of HRD Ministry to open the new schools.
The Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangthan (KVS), a premier organisation, is running 981 schools with over ten lakh students and nearly 50,000 employees.

The Bundelkhand region, whose development is being accorded top priority by the UPA government, will get seven KVs. The region comprises seven districts -- Jalaun, Lalitpur, Hamirpur, Mahoba, Banda and Chitrakoot from Uttar Pradesh and Tikamgarh from Madhya Pradesh.

Except Lalitpur, none of the di ... Read more »

ApnaBundelkhand.com, New Delhi: The Centre may be giving crores to the state to ensure drinking water supply in rural areas, but students of primary schools in Bundelkhand and east Uttar Pradesh are forced to stay thirsty during school hours. Reason: The handpumps installed under the Centrally supported Rajiv Gandhi Rural Drinking Water Mission (RGRDWM) in 205 primary schools in 13 districts have gone dry.

These pumps will be re-bored after more than six months despite the Centre releasing funds for the same in October last and the districts having received the same (funds) in December 2009.

Besides ensuring that these handpumps are restored in working condition by July, the UP Jal Nigam also plans to ask the districts to explain why they have not been re-bored despite the districts having received the money.

ApnaBundelkhand.com, New Delhi: Madhya Pradesh government Tuesday decided to set up a university in the backward Bundelkhand region of the state, a minister said. 'The decision has been taken at a meeting of the state cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan,' Parliamentary Affairs Minister Narottam Mishra told mediapersons here. 'Apart from a university in the state's backward Bundelkhand region, the state cabinet also decided to establish 14 new government colleges in the state,' Mishra said. Besides a decision to give UGC pay-scales to teaching and non-teaching staff of the colleges from January 1, 2006, the state cabinet decided that the retirement age of the teaching staff of universities and colleges will also be raised to 65 years from the present 62 years, he said. However, those retired teachers who would be engaged as guest faculty would be entitled for ... Read more »

ApnaBundelkhand.com, Lucknow: The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Scheme (MNREGS) was launched to give villagers a chance to earn a living in their own villages for at least 100 days. But a survey conducted by the district rural development authorities (DRDA) across the seven districts of Bundelkhand has revealed that a large percentage of these job card holders had never demanded work.

The MNREGS is a demand-based scheme, where a job card holder gives an application to the gram pradhan or the panchayat secretary, demanding work under the scheme. According to official sources, since reports of job card holders not demanding any work began pouring in, the state government decided to conduct a statewide survey and make a list of those job card holders who did not demand work between December 2008 and February 2010.

Commissioner (MNREGS) Sanjeev Kumar said ... Read more »

ApnaBundelkhand.com, Jalaun: With the onset of summer, Jharaina and Maharajpura villages in Madhogarh block of Jalaun district are parched and thirsting for water. But Himmatpura, a neighbouring village in the same block, has set an example by recharging rainwater and—according to the latest block-level groundwater survey report—increasing the groundwater level by seven feet in the last two years.

Located in the drought-prone Bundelkhand region, Himmatpura (literally ‘place of courage’) village, too, was facing drinking water shortage, right from the beginning of summer till October every year. That was before the village—which has a population of 546 households—started saving and recharging water. Nine pucca houses and an equal number of kuchcha huts, all of which fall in a straight line, are involved in the project. Plastic p ... Read more »

ApnaBundelkhand.com, Lucknow: If all goes well, U.P. will soon get a temple dedicated to Chief Minister and Dalit icon Mayawati, whose statues already dot the sprawling state.

The temple is proposed to be erected in the poverty-stricken Mahoba district in Bundelkhand, economically the most backward region in Uttar Pradesh.

It will come up in Natpura village, about 300 km from here.

"Of course, we are planning to install her idol in the temple that will come up on my private land," Kanaihya Lal, a Mahoba-based lawyer, told IANS over telephone.

Lal is not a functionary of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) but a Dalit. He says he got provoked by the hue and cry over a garland of currency notes gifted to Mayawati ... Read more »

ApnaBundelkhand.com, New Delhi: Even as the nationalised and private lenders pat their backs, flaunting mounting number of Kisan Credit Cards (KCCs) disbursed, the credit worn farmers in Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh are reverting to distress suicides, reminiscent of the situation two years back. The latest incident involves a peasant from Banda mandal, who hanged himself to death giving in to his inability to repay debt of Rs 50,000 he had borrowed from local branch of Allahabad Bank.

Locals fear that such incidents are poised to recur if timely and adequate pre-emptive measures are not initiated. It may be noticed that the Banda mandal has the distinction of maximum farmers having obtained KCCs, 22,675 to be precise.

According to official data, total harvest loans ... Read more »

ApnaBundelkhand.com, New Delhi: The Congress party’s attempt to strengthen its political foothold in electorally crucial Uttar Pradesh (UP) by pushing a development plan for the state’s drought-hit Bundelkhand region has been short-circuited by chief minister Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) government.
In the process, UP lost out on a Rs18,000 crore power plant that was to have been built in Bundelkhand, a 70,000 sq. km region that sprawls over UP and Madhya Pradesh (MP).
The UP government imposed conditions that would have restricted the sale of power generated by the proposed 4,000MW project, which was to be built by state-run power generator NTPC Ltd. In other words, the part of Bundhelkhand falling in MP would not have received power from the project.
NTPC has been forced to relocate the project to MP, ruled by the main opp ... Read more »

ApnaBundelkhand.com, MP: Bundelkhand may not yet be a state, but the recent grant at the generally peripheral region seems to have ignited a domino effect of attention to it. Still largely poverty stricken, its voice largely unheard not just at the federal but even the state level, it was desperately in need for knights such as Rahul Gandhi, whose espousal for the region’s upliftment is said to be behind the Rs 1,200 crore grant.
Even then, Machan at Delhi’s Taj Mahal Hotel, the rendezvous point of the city’s high and influential, is not where the region is likely to have up for discussion. Except that of late it has been. For it has a unique proposition—10% of all revenues made from orders on special Bundelkhandi cuisine go towards conservation of forests in the vicinity of the four lodges operated by Taj Safaris in the area. This includes subsidising LPG gas c ... Read more »
