Madhya Pradesh CM demands Rs 24,000 cr for Bundelkhand
ApnaBundelkhand.com | Transforming Bundelkhand New Delhi, Jan 22 : Madhya
Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan today demanded a Rs 24,000
crore package from the Centre for development of the Bundelkhand region
and also called for speedy approval of power sector proposals for
funding through external agencies. Mr Chouhan, who met Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee here,
also demanded 17 lakh metric tonnes of coal for the cola-based power
plants in the state. Addressing newspersons here, Mr Chouhan said,
''At present, the state has been granted a package for the development
of Bundelkhand which is much less than Rs 24,000 crore that we had
asked for. In my meeting with the Prime Minister and Finance Minister I
stressed the need for funds for the development of backward areas like
Bagelkhand, Vindhyas and Mahakaushal.'' During his meeting with the
Prime Minister, Mr Chouhan also put forth a demand for 17 lakh tonnes
of coal required to meet the needs of the power plants in the state. ''Madhya Pradesh has been among the major producers of coal in the country, contributing 68 lakh metric tonnes every month.
However,
our power plants have been thirsting for coal. The state requires 17
lakh MT of coal for coal-based power plants and gets only 11 lakh MT
from the Centre,''Mr Chouhan added. The Madhya Pradesh Chief
Minister further said,''Currently, we are being asked by the centre to
meet the deficit by importing Coal. However, this is not practically
feasible as the state's geographical position is such that it has no
ports.'' In the meeting, Mr Chaouhan urged the Prime Minister to
allocate the deficit coal from Birsinghpur itself. ''Dr Singh accepted the suggestion and assured of an early action in this regard,''he said. Mr
Chouhan also apprised the PM of power sector proposals pending with the
Centre for approval and also sought his intervention for approval of
these proposals for funding through external agencies.
