Sitting in her hut in Soopa village in Mahoba district, Bundelkhand, eight-year-old Juni says she wants to learn French. She’d like to thank her "godmother”, French journalist Anne Marie Duthu, in her native tongue. "She can’t speak Hindi, so I want to learn French and tell her that she means so much to me and my family,” says little Juni. After visiting the family last year, Duthu decided to fund the education of Juni and her siblings till the time they are able to support their widowed mother, Kapoori Devi.

Thirty-eight-year-old Kapoori Devi’s life was shattered two years ago, when her husband Brijlal, 45, committed suicide on November 25, 2007, by hanging himself from a tree—he had failed to repay debts to a moneylender and his earnings as a farm labourer could not support his family. "I was left behind with five children to take care of. I wanted to end my life ... Read more »

The state governments can now seek 90 per cent grant assistance from the Centre to develop irrigation projects under the accelerated irrigation benefit scheme.

The remaining 10 per cent will be loan. Typically, such a funding from the Centre is in form of 70 per cent loan and 30 per cent grant. Only hill states have been given special category status so far.

ApnaBundelkhand.com, Lucknow: To open up job avenues for the youths of Bundelkhand region, State Minister for Rural Development Daddu Prasad has asked his department to take the educated rural youth on board in the technical structure of schemes like Swarnjayanti Grameen Swarozgar Yojna (SGSY) and the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS).

The department has also been asked to train the youth in tasks pertaining to the monitoring and implementation of these schemes.

The decision is an extension of Chief Minister Mayawati’s announcement made in Jhansi on January 29, 2008, seeking the provision of vocational training to the unskilled educated youth throughout the state to make them job-ready.

"After the chief minister announced that unemployed youths will be turned into skilled labourers, we started vocational training programmes, with Bundelkhand being our focus area. Now, we have over 10,00 ... Read more »

ApnaBundelkhand.com, New Delhi: Bundelkhand region is spread in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Development works are going on there funded by the Central Government. In Madhya Pradesh there are six Bundelkhandi districts - Datia, Chhattarpur, Panna, Damoh, Tikamgarh and Sagar. For these the Centre has already sanctioned Rs 3760 crore. Out of this the balance amount of Rs 2160 crore would be spent in the next three years. The basic principle of development is that if there is infrastructure, development would occur. Towns and cities came up only there where there are rivers, lakes or other sources of water. Land, water and electricity are most necessary to develop any area.
The main problem faced by the Bundelkhand region is continuous shortage of rainfall. Drought is common in this area due to which farming is severely affected. As there are no other employment opportunities the populace shifts to green pastures. During the last four years shortage of rainfall ... Read more »

ApnaBundelkhand.com, NEW DELHI: Politically charged Bundelkhand — the backward region which has been turned into a battlefield between UP CM Mayawati and Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi — will be granted special category status, meaning Centre will meet 90% of the cost of irrigation projects for the drought-hit region.

Sources said a high-level committee headed by Planning Commission secretary Sudha Pillai has approved the proposal to grant special category status at par with drought-prone areas, implying that districts in the region will get 90% grant assistance from Centre under Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme (AIBP).

With the adoption of 14 districts of UP and MP under AIBP, the move will help in mitigating water scarcity in the water-scarce region which is wholly dependent on monsoon because of a poor irrigation network. With the fresh move, Bundelkhand region will be treated at par with areas covered under Drought Prone Area Pro ... Read more »

ApnaBundelkhand.com,LUCKNOW: Over the past eight years, Bhure Kol has added two rooms to his house, replaced its thatched roof with corrugated iron sheets and bought a second—hand moped. The illiterate tribal from Masaura, Lalitpur in Bundelkhand owes his prosperity to the rich herbal haul made by the family of six.
The demand for ware on sale — Ashwagandha (withania somnifera) known popularly as Indian ginseng, White Museli (chiorophytum barivillianum) touted as desi Viagra, and other assorted prized herbs has gone up manifold. Therefore the market is growing, price is good and most importantly buyers turn up at his doorsteps saving him a business trip out of the quiet little hamlet to Jhansi.

A hotbed of intense political activity, Bundelkhand is fast turning into a favourite hunting ground for big players in the alternative medicine. The region, in league with Orissa and Chattisgarh with its abundant medicinal plant produce, is equally vulnerable due to e ... Read more »
