Sitting in her hut in Soopa village
in Mahoba district, Bundelkhand, eight-year-old Juni says she wants to
learn French. She’d like to thank her "godmother”, French journalist
Anne Marie Duthu, in her native tongue. "She can’t speak Hindi, so I
want to learn French and tell her that she means so much to me and my
family,” says little Juni. After visiting the family last year, Duthu
decided to fund the education of Juni and her siblings till the time
they are able to support their widowed mother, Kapoori Devi.
Thirty-eight-year-old
Kapoori Devi’s life was shattered two years ago, when her husband
Brijlal, 45, committed suicide on November 25, 2007, by hanging himself
from a tree—he had failed to repay debts to a moneylender and his
earnings as a farm labourer could not support his family. "I was left
behind with five children to take care of. I wanted to end my life

ApnaBundelkhand.com, Lucknow: To open up job avenues for the youths of Bundelkhand region, State Minister for Rural Development Daddu Prasad has asked his department to take the educated rural youth on board in the technical structure of schemes like Swarnjayanti Grameen Swarozgar Yojna (SGSY) and the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS).
The department has also been asked to train the youth in tasks pertaining to the monitoring and implementation of these schemes.
The decision is an extension of Chief Minister Mayawati’s announcement made in Jhansi on January 29, 2008, seeking the provision of vocational training to the unskilled educated youth throughout the state to make them job-ready.
"After the chief minister announced that unemployed youths will be turned into skilled labourers, we started vocational training programmes, with Bundelkhand being our focus area. Now, we have over 10,00

ApnaBundelkhand.com, New Delhi: Bundelkhand region is spread in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
Development works are going on there funded by the Central Government.
In Madhya Pradesh there are six Bundelkhandi districts - Datia,
Chhattarpur, Panna, Damoh, Tikamgarh and Sagar. For these the Centre has
already sanctioned Rs 3760 crore. Out of this the balance amount of Rs
2160 crore would be spent in the next three years. The basic principle
of development is that if there is infrastructure, development would
occur. Towns and cities came up only there where there are rivers, lakes
or other sources of water. Land, water and electricity are most
necessary to develop any area. The main problem faced by the
Bundelkhand region is continuous shortage of rainfall. Drought is common
in this area due to which farming is severely affected. As there are no
other employment opportunities the populace shifts to green pastures.
During the last four years shortage of rainfall
